Mike (Mihail Neikov) is a young man (early 30's) from Sofia who started his travel career taking busloads of Bulgarian kids to Budapest for rock concerts. He is a good driver, honest and easy to get along with. He took us to a lot of interesting places and introduced us to wonderful Bulgarians. In addition to conducting small tourist trips I think he is also available to escort business people. Pictures of him appear several times through this web page. Note, at the time of our trip he was starting a beard, which will eventually make him look very much like the picture of his great-grandfather - who was an priest in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

We have always traveled on the cheap with the help of a guidebook and a few recommendations from friends. Group tours are generally too regimented and/or expensive. Also, we prefer to fade, as much as possible, into the local background - which is difficult when you are part of a large gaggle of brightly clad people speaking loudly in a foreign tongue . But Bulgaria, in particular, sounded like an exceptional challenge because of the language and the Cyrilic alphabet. We had visions of wasting hours trying to buy tickets, getting from transport to hotels, checking in and out, pouring over incomprehensible menus.
I found Mike by patiently reading the small ads in the International Travel News (ITN). He and I communicated by FAX. Mike said he would charge about $1000 USD to drive the two of us around for a week, provide bed and breakfast and translate. He was able to furnish us with the US telephone number of a former customer, Walter W., who sounded completely legitimate and who was very enthusiastic about Mike's services.
Note that the cost of Mike's trips will vary depending upon the itinerary and the quality of the hotel rooms you specify.
